Australian and New Zealand plants have always been a passion of mine. Many of these plants are virtually unknown in cultivation, even though many of the Australian and New Zealand plants I mention on this page are hardy or can otherwise tolerate quite a bit of frost. Eucalyptus niphophila has been in our garden since 2006 and has therefore been hardy in our garden for 14 years. I often hear that the Callistemon is not hardy, but the species pityoideshas also been in our garden since 2008, so it has been hardy here for 12 years as well. With the right location, shelter from the drying east wind, good drainage, and protection during a truly cold winter, a lot is actually possible.
